15. General Education Policy Accommodations

15.1 Language Accommodations

Some students may qualify for accommodations to the General Education language requirement.

  1. Students approved by the Office of Academic Accessibility for a language accommodation may complete the six-credit language requirement through two of the following courses: Intercultural Perspectives Global courses, Global Cross-Cultural course, or any language course. These six credits will not overlap with the already required three-credit Intercultural Perspectives Global requirement.
  2. Students proficient in a non-English language may obtain a waiver or credit toward the General Education language requirement.
    1. If a student passes a written examination through an accredited external testing agency, academic credit is awarded for the levels of language the student passes. Students are awarded academic credit because they pay for external exams and written proficiency is typically only possible when a student has received some education in the target language.
    2. If a student passes an in-house written exam or an oral exam through an external testing agency, they obtain a waiver for the levels of language they pass but are not awarded credit. Because students do not pay for in-house placement tests, the waiver (but not credit) is warranted. If a student can pass an oral exam, they have fulfilled the requirement but not to a level that warrants academic credit.
    3. If a student is proficient in a language for which no testing option is available, they should contact the Office of General Education and Common learning.
