Heather's Career Journey
Before her current position at the Essex House, Heather worked as a Training and Development Coordinator at an assisted living facility and as an Activity Assistant at a nursing home.
Working as an Enrichment Coordinator/Activities Director
Heather creates a monthly calendar for activities each month which includes writing articles appropriate for the community. She participates and encourages participation in different activities. She takes residents on various outings and connects with individuals within the community. Heather also purchases anything that her department may need for activities (craft supplies, food, decorations, games, entertainment). She communicates with all residents through monthly resident activity meetings, regarding any upcoming events or changes. Heather is responsible for resident intake questionnaires when residents move in to get to know them better. She also keeps track of the military veterans living within the community and makes sure that their photos are displayed. Overall, Heather encourages a strong sense of community among the residents.
How has HDFS prepared you?
"HDFS helped a great deal since I deal with a lot of different dynamics not just from the individuals I work with every day but also when dealing with the different families. Helping a family member to understand that their loved one needs more assistance whether it be with in home care or moving them to an assisted living or nursing home can be very challenging. Having the most contact with them I usually am one of the first individuals to notice any significant changes."
