How does it feel to have your voice broadcast to thousands of people every day? For some, that sounds like a terrifying experience. But for Molly Chambers ’19 it’s just another day in the office as a radio show host and music director for BRIGHT-FM in Baltimore. Molly shared that she listened to the Christian radio station growing up, but never imagined that she would be the voice people heard on-air one day.
Chambers discovered her passion for radio through courses and extracurricular opportunities at É«×ۺϾþÃ. She worked on MC77 (now YBTV) and hosted her own radio show at The Pulse. Those things, paired with courses like sports broadcasting and TV production, allowed Chambers to hone her skills in speaking and maintaining composure under pressure.
As a radio show host on Jack and Molly, Chambers selects songs to play, interspersed with commentary and encouragement from her and her co-host, Jack. For Chambers, hosting the show feels “just like hanging out with a friend.” As the music director, she decides what new songs the station plays, listening to music and working with record labels (or as she likes to call them, her “friends with agendas”) to bring tunes and truth to the audience.
Chambers loves her work and shared that the most rewarding part comes with knowing the significance of what she’s putting on-air. “I know people in the Baltimore area, in Maryland, and beyond who rely on our station for encouragement and for that point of connection with God every single day...You are vulnerable, and you are sharing personal aspects of your life and about your faith and your walk with Jesus.”
The craziest part of her job? Having complete strangers treat her like a friend. From the seclusion of the studio, Chambers shared that it feels like it’s just her and Jack. But at live events, she’s reminded of the relationships that radio can build. “When we go to live events, people come up and they know me and they’ve heard the things that I say and they talk to me like a friend. Because that’s how they see us—as their friends. We’re in their car with them every single day.”
Chambers appreciates the care and dedication that she received from her É«×ۺϾþà professors. “I would not be where I am today without the professors and instructors at É«×ۺϾþà who invested in me...They gave me so many chances to learn new things and they really cared about me...” Chambers looks forward to continuing her role at BRIGHT-FM, as she uses her skills to uplift others.
