“When I first started working I struggled with [my faith interfacing with my work] as it is an environment where faith and God is not openly discussed. I see the nursing homes as somewhat of a “mission field” it is where God has called me to share love and light among patients and families who are dealing with illness and death. I am very blessed that I have the opportunity to be the light in someone’s day through providing them with care and kindness.
Lindsay’s Career Journey
“This is my first “real” job out of college, in the past, I worked as a waitress and in retail. I am looking into getting my master’s soon!”
Working as a Community Liaison
“My role is to set up home health services with patients going home from nursing homes. This is coordinated with the social workers at the nursing homes. I have the opportunity to go into all of the local nursing home facilities to meet with patients and their families to discuss home health care services, providing the services they need and a safe discharge home. Marketing is also a part of my role, as I am representing the hospital I work for and trying to bring in new patients to our agency.
How has HDFS prepared you?
“Being a Human Development and Family Science major has helped me to navigate life with a better understanding of humans and how we interact. HDFS taught me ways to work better with others, to understand that a family background truly shapes a person. I am extremely grateful for the knowledge I gained in classes on lifespan development and family dynamics. All of the things I learned, I put to use everyday in caring for geriatric patients and their family.”
