Job Description:
Every day is different working at Tempo Clubhouse. My main role is to help facilitate a work-ordered day with adults who have a mental illness diagnosis (bipolar, borderline, schizophrenia, etc.) . The work-ordered day that the clients participate in is meant to simulate skills and tasks that a person may experience when working on the job. Some of these tasks may include cleaning, computer related tasks, or even working as a barista. The main goal as a staff person is to empower individuals with mental health diagnoses to integrate into society successfully and healthily.
Please describe your career journey and how you have come to be at your current position.:
I interned at two places before applying for the job at CSG. These internships included one at Tricounty Community Action where I rotated departments such as casework, family center, and the youth program. After this internship, I interned with a self-sufficiency advocate at The Factory Ministries where I experienced case management and resources available to individuals who are in rural poverty.
How has the Human Development and Family Science program helped you prepare for your work?:
The Human Development and Family Science program has equipped me so well in my field by helping me to be systems focused in my approach to problems rather than solely focusing on the individual and their present state. Having a systems approach as my default mindset has given me a greater understanding of a person or situation that would not have been achieved otherwise.
Which undergraduate courses are most helpful to you in your job?:
Dynamics of Family Interaction, Marriage & Family Therapy, Interpersonal Relationships, Community Services for Individuals and Families, Family Ethnicity and Human Services, Senior Seminar
How does your faith interface with your work?:
Since I work at a company that is not directly associated with the Christian faith, I practice my faith professionally by representing my faith through actions rather than explicitly through words.
Is there any advice you would give to current and/or prospective students?:
Take your time and be flexible for what God has in store for you rather than what you have in store for yourself. I never in a million years imagined working in the mental health field, but obviously God had other plans.
