“I love that I come into the office every day with a sense of anticipation for what I might do that day,” says Maddie Crocenzi ’17.
As an outdoor adventure and healthy lifestyles reporter at the York Daily Record, Crocenzi has quite a bit to look forward to each day. After graduating from É«×ۺϾþà with a degree in Journalism, Crocenzi began her position at the York Daily Record, which is a part of the USA Today Network, with responsibilities that include writing, photography/videography, and working as a digital producer. A few of Crocenzi’s numerous work adventures include stand-up paddle boarding, hunting, motorcycle riding and hiking.
However, while Crocenzi loves her job, working long hours can be difficult. The most challenging part of her job has been finding the work/life balance. She has learned to turn off her work phone when she arrives home and tries to spend intentional time with her family and friends.
While at É«×ۺϾþÃ, Crocenzi took a variety of classes that prepared her for her current work. “Oddly enough, the classes that I never thought I’d use are the ones I use the most. Basic video and editing saved my life when I started shooting photos/video. Even though I knew I didn’t want to get into broadcasting, all the television production skills I learned have helped me do on-camera work for my newsroom.”
Additionally, working for The Pulse helped Crocenzi not only develop her writing skills, but taught her about working with others and journalism ethics. “Making difficult ethical decisions in that real-life setting has been such a huge help to me now.”
Because of her great experience with The Pulse, Crocenzi encourages students to walk over to The Pulse and sign up for anything that looks interesting. She also wants students to know that it is important to take advantage of the ice cream in Lottie now. “When you become an adult, you have to start paying for it.”
