"I was surprised because I thought I wanted to work in the news department and I ended up enjoying the work I do in production," said Sarah Newton ('15). "It's interesting going into a job or internship expecting to like the work you¹re doing to find out that your passion lies somewhere else."
Like many undecided college students, Newton discovered her passion for television production through hands-on internship experience. Now, she runs cameras, audio, graphics, editing and controls for ABC 27 News. Newton graduated in 2015 with a degree in Communications and a concentration in Broadcasting. While interning at ABC 27 News her senior year, the station hired her during her internship, making "getting her foot in the door" easier than she thought.
In her near two years of experience, Newton originally began in the news department as an assignment editor, social media and website manager, and editor. After a year and a half with the company, she pursued a production position and currently acts as the station¹s Production Technician. She also worked at PCN (The Pennsylvania Cable Network) as a side job for a few months to learn more about broadcasting.
É«×ۺϾþÃ's professors provided a personalized atmosphere for her during her college experience. "I appreciate that the class sizes were small so I was able to get a one-on-one feel with the professor. I was able to make relationships with my professors and they were genuinely interested in my life. I also enjoyed when a professor would open class with prayer." "Do not give up," Newton said.
"Do not expect to get your dream job right off the bat. It takes hard work and dedication. Do not be afraid to take a job that could help you get to the point you want in a company."
Newton also encouraged students to work hard even when it seems like no one is watching: take control of your work ethic, and remember that even though it may seem like others have it all together, you do not have to feel like you have it all figured out yet.
